Upward Bound grant

Upward Bound focuses on the academic support and personal development of its participants during high school. It provides supplemental education, personal and academic counseling, tutoring, mentoring, career exploration, assistance with scholarships and financial aid applications, and the cultural exposure necessary for potential first-generation college students and/or economically disadvantaged youth to successfully complete both secondary and postsecondary education.

The Foundation gave two grants to the Upward Bound Academy at the University of Alabama - Birmingham to provide conflict resolution workshops, justice and legal education (to include activism and freedom of speech), safe-zone training, cultural exposure, scholarships, and shadowing opportunities for their program participants and parents/guardians.

The Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama (¡HICA!) is a community development and advocacy organization that works to improve the lives of Latino and immigrant families in Alabama. ¡HICA!'s mission is to champion economic equality, civic engagement, and social justice. Their vision is an Alabama where everyone has full and equal participation in civic, cultural, social, and economic life.

HICA received a Foundation grant to support the enhancement of its naturalization clinics and webinars to facilitate in-person and online educational and informational activities focused on increasing the number of Naturalization applications. This grant helped cover the cost of the books needed to sustain the Department of Justice accreditations for staff, along with the bilingual books and materials that are vital to the success of their program.

Resolve to Solve

The Birmingham Bar Foundation’s Resolve 2 Solve Conflict Resolution training is for students in grades 9 through 12. It is designed to give high school students the tools to handle conflicts with their peers and with adults. The primary goal of the program is to teach students to avoid violence and to decrease their discipline infractions in school. This is a powerful program that positively impacts students’ lives.

In partnership with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the BBA, Resolve 2 Solve Conflict Resolution training covers four (4) major objectives: 1) Understanding conflict, 2) Aggressiveness vs. Assertiveness, 3) Resolving Social Conflict on Social Media, and 4) Handling Adult/Teen Conflict. Ultimately, through the completion of the training, the overarching goal is to minimize disciplinary incidents that are the result of escalating and unresolved conflict.

Students Excited to Attend Oral Arguments at Samford’s Wright Center

bringing alabama’s appellate courts to birmingham

Since 2005, the Birmingham Bar Association, the Birmingham Bar Foundation and Cumberland School of Law have co-sponsored a so-called “Birmingham Road Show” of the Alabama Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeals or the Court of Civil Appeals. The Courts hear oral arguments at Samford University’s Wright Center, creating a unique opportunity for local middle school and high school students, law students, members of the legal community, and the general public to see Alabama’s appellate courts at work and increase their understanding of Alabama’s legal system. To facilitate the students’ learning experience, a BBA member speaks at the participating schools in advance of the arguments to educate students about the legal system. Handout materials are made available at the oral arguments for all of those attending.
